Black Swan
by Gary Barnidge on December 18th, 2010
The Starting Lineup – Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) Lily (Mila Kunis) Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) Erica Sayers (Barbara Hershey) Beth Macintyre (Winona Ryder) Darren Aronofsky ( Director)
Gary’s Thoughts – Only in Aronofsky’s eyes could someone truly show the hardships, pain, struggle, and happiness that is involved with being a Ballerina. This movie will be one of the movies that are up for movie of the year and in my eyes it should definitely win movie of the year. Black swan is a dark and twisted movie that has some twists mixed in. Natalie Portman should win a best actress award with her role in which she struggles with trying to find a darker side of herself to use in her performance. She delivers as an innocent girl who is so caught up with trying to be perfect it starts to effect her personality. Mila Kunis holds her own with her screen time even with it being limited her character is a nice mix up with her being wild and easy going compared to Portman’s innocent and reclusive character. The lighting, dancing and camera work is something that truly stands out throughout the whole film with the lighter lighting for the swan queen and darker lighting for the dark swan even when it isn’t during the dance scenes. The dancing is something that looks very tough and would need lots of practice and it looks like Portman took lessons to help make the character feel more genuine.
The Game Plan – When Nina (Portman) is selected as the swan queen she realizes that she has a new rival that causes her worry and work harder to keep her title while trying to find a new part of herself.
Touchdowns - There are way to many to name them all because the whole movie is a touchdown. The camera work is something that builds the character by having a close up camera that builds on there mannerisms and expressions that really stand out. The acting performance by Natalie Portman is a truly captivating performance. The story is a dark and intriguing movie that will have you guessing what will happen next while also making you wonder what it real and what isn’t. For the most part the movie as a whole is amazing which makes all the movie a positive.
Penalties – There isn’t anything wrong with this movie.
The Game Winner – Again this whole movie is the game winner but the main stand out is Natalie Portman in her role as the swan queen. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole movie. The story of Swan Lake they are portraying in there show is also very similar to the story that the movie is deliver so see you can catch the similarities.
Game Summary – This is a must see movie what will bring you into the world of being a ballerina and hardships and how much work truly goes into it. The movie has some dark twists that you may not see coming but also will keep you guessing on what will happen next and you may catch yourself asking did that just really happen. There just isn’t much to be said about the movie except its exceptional and a must see and in my opinion is the movie of the year.
