Yogi Bear

by Dante Rosario on December 16th, 2010

The Players: Dan Aykroyd (voice), Justin Timberlake (voice), Anna Faris, Tom Cavanagh, T.J. Miller, Nathan Corddry, and Andrew Daly.

The Game Plan: Yogi Bear and Boo Boo team up with Ranger Smith to save Jellystone Park on its 100th anniversary.  Mayor Brown wants to close the park and sell the land rights to solve the city’s bankruptcy problem, but soon finds out that the pesky bear with a love for picnic baskets, and misadventure will make the task much more difficult.  In order to save Yogi and Boo Boo’s home, Yogi will have to prove that he is “smarter than the average bear.”

Dante’s Thoughts: The best thing this movie has to offer is the 3D, which will appeal to young children the most.  Personally, I wasn’t very fond of the story.  I mean there really isn’t much you can get out of a story about a talking bear who likes to steal picnic baskets from unsuspecting campers, is there?  …Oh yeah the park is endangered, and they somehow manage to fit in a love story between Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh), and a documentary filmmaker named Rachel (Anna Faris).  Of course all this is going on while Yogi and Boo Boo are wreaking havoc on the Mayor’s campaign to sell Jellystone Park to evil developers.   They tried…  The only positives I can think of would be Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake’s voice work.

Touchdowns: Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake were spot on with their vocal performances, and the 3D is appealing throughout the film.  While I wasn’t a fan of the acting in this movie or the plot, there were few scenes I found funny.

Penalties: The flag has to go against the plot…this movie wasn’t good at all.  The film starts with the basic idea that Jellystone Park will close if enough money isn’t raised to save it.  Then, they throw a love story is into the mix.  The biggest foul however, is the last minute twist thrown in at the very end to justify saving the park.  …I won’t spoil it for the people who want to see this film by telling.  I know kids are the target audience for this movie, and I know the plot wasn’t supposed to be that complex, but there wasn’t as much laughter coming from the kids in the audience as I’d anticipated.

The Fumble: I’m sure many people may know and love the original stories of Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, and the rest of the Jellystone gang.  While it’s hard for me to knock a kids movie, the truth is a bad movie…is a bad movie.
