Due Date

by Gary Barnidge on November 4th, 2010

The Starting Lineup – Robert Downey Jr. (Peter Highman), Zach Galifianakis (Ethan Tremblay), Michelle Monaghan (Sarah Highman), Jamie Foxx (Darrly), Danny McBride (Lonnie), and Todd Phillips (Director).

Gary’s Thoughts – Robert Downey Jr. just continues to prove why he is considered one the best actors in the business with his comedic timing as well as his ability to adapt to his character. Galifianakis just keeps building his fame as a great comedic actor. I thought the movie was a mix of Roadtrip, Hangover, and Old School mixed with a little bit of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles which are all great movies, and this delivers another movie to be added to that category. Due Date has some very funny comedy which at times could be a little crude but is still very funny. It also has a blend of some dramatic points which help fill the movie but works wonderfully. The Dog in the movie has some very funny scenes that could be some of the funniest in the film.

The Gameplan – A soon to be father Peter Highman (Downey Jr) is kicked off a plane because of a misunderstanding in which he loses his wallet and ID and needs to get cross country to his wife who is ready to give birth anyday, so he reluctantly agrees to ride with the guy who got him kicked off the plane, Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) and hilarity ensues.

Touchdowns – The on-screen chemistry between Downey Jr. and Galifianakis is amazing in the same way that Steve Martin and John Candy had in a film similar to this one called Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Cameos by Jamie Foxx and Danny McBride add in an extra few laughs which could never hurt. This film will make you laugh from beginning to end. Also the way they use other movies and shows (Forrest Gump, Godfather, 2 and a Half Men) to tie in comedy truly is something that is enjoyable.

Penalties – Some of the comedy is very crude and can gross some people out and may deter people to tell others to see the film. The film really has no real plot which doesn’t hurt this type of movie but just don’t go into this movie expecting a real plot.

Coaching Performance – Todd Phillips who is known for such hits as Old School, The Hangover, Starsky and Hutch, and Roadtrip, delivers another fun filled adventure that makes you laugh even when you don’t expect to laugh. He takes a plot that worked in a previous movie (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles) and just put his own spin on and it works wonders.

The Game Winner – The comedic presence and timing of both Galifianakis and Downey Jr. are truly remarkable and looks as if they have acted together in many movies together. The comedy will keep you laughing from start to finish and will catch you off guard at times so be on the look out when you least expect it.

Game Summary – Due Date is a hilarious movie that has lots of humor with some very crude humor mixed in that may turn some people off but for the most part will keep you laughing. This is the new generations Planes, Trains, and Automobiles in my eyes.
